WHAT CAN WE DO?

Break the silence. End the denial.
Learn the facts and tell everyone we know.

Stop making messes we can’t clean up.
We expect it of our children. Why not our government and top-level scientists? World-wide, nuclear reactors produce less energy than renewable resources. Why not here?

Insist on complete and accurate information from government agencies and representatives. What is our exposure? Where are the contaminated sites, and how bad are they? Where are the shipment routes? Is nuclear policy about health or money?

Talk to our doctors. Insist on knowing the exposure of all x-rays and other diagnostic procedures. Are they absolutely necessary? Is your doctor aware of current health studies on the risk of thyroid cancer, leukemia, etc., and prevention and early detection techniques?

Take personal action to reduce energy use. Use energy-efficient light bulbs and appliances. Over time, the effects are enormous.  Recycle everything! Learn about non-toxic energy like solar and wind generation, new vehicle designs and fuels. Explore simple construction techniques that vastly reduce the need for heating and cooling. Santa Barbara just made renewable energy a city-wide goal—what about your town?

Get involved locally and nationally!
  • Ask our elected officials their positions on nuclear issues.
  • Insist that the National Health Institute's Nuclear Testing Cancer Study be released to the public.
  • Use the services on our Links page to send messages often to our elected officials. It really does make a difference!
  • Use and promote businesses that have sound energy, health and labor practices.
  •  Pass a Nuclear Free Zone resolution or Nuclear Transportation Ban in your town. We have samples from other communities.
  • Get fact sheets and maps and pass them out.
  • Join an email newsgroup or subscribe to one of many excellent newsletters for regular updates.
  • Write letters to our newspapers. Call and ask them to cover the local angle on nuclear issues.
  • Talk to church, hospital and community groups, speak out on radio talk shows.
  • Find the nearest organization and volunteer, or start one in your community. Letter writing parties are more fun than doing it alone.
Please support HOME if you are able. The communities that most need our services are unable to help with costs. Please help sponsor Museum tours of reservations and communities. Tell others about this site. Email this link to a friend. Print out fact sheets and statements from the Peoples Policy section. Visit other sites from our Links section- learn, share information, and take responsible action now!

With a mess this big, there’s certainly something each and every one of us can do.
